This St. Paul home was originally built in 1887 and was one of the first in the area. Multiple renovation projects over the years had created a hodge-podge of styles, the end result of which was an aesthetically unpleasing home. The new homeowner purchased it with the goal of restoring its beauty and transforming it from a three bedroom house into a majestic six bedroom home utilizing an architectural design made by his father. This project really became a major make-over when it was discovered that the foundation was in very poor shape. The depth of the the existing basement made the space practically unusable.

The basement remodel began by jacking up the house and replacing the foundation. Recreation area, media room, guest bedroom, 3/4 bath, kitchenette/bar, and storage area were then able to be added to the basement. First level remodeling included a new kitchen and rear entry, study, powder room, and family room expansion. Second level improvements consisted of a new bedroom and laundry room. Floor plans of both first and second levels were completely reworked, including the removal of several walls creating a more open feel to the whole area. The additional space was augmented by arched ceilings, pillars and beams. Period appropriate millwork was installed throughout the house to establish the “Arts and Crafts” design of the structure. Third level improvements included creation of a master suite and home office.

The exterior design was intended to complement the original design of the home. Horizontal lap siding and cedar shake siding were matched to the original exterior, and beadboard ceilings and hardwood flooring on the porches carried the theme established inside to the outside. The wrap-around porch and steeple tower transformed the house into a visually appealing turn-of-the-century home.

Of course a fine home needs a fine garage. The two level heated unit was designed to provide room for two cars on the upper alley level, and seasonal boat storage below. The two levels are connected by an interior stairs. Clean storage is available above the car park, and the whole interior is humidity controlled to compensate for the quantity of exposed masonry. Completely finished inside, this marvelously detailed garage complements the house using the same lap siding and shingle design.

Overall the livable square footage of the home was increased over 80% by additions to three levels. 1100 square feet of habitable space was added to the basement alone.
